Team Connection Mapping and Compass Development

By sitting sentinel for identified goals/outcomes, I facilitate an environment for you and your team to redefine critical paths and quickly get all stakeholders unified on a strategic forward-moving trajectory.

Customized solutions to meet your pressing needs.

Each team project is assessed individually to determine the best approach, with deliverables and benchmark assessments built in along the way. Our basic process looks like this:

Connection Mapping is a cycle

Connection Mapping is a cycle

  1. All work begins with an Intake Session (Phase 1) to determine the scope of the project, challenges and goals.  This is typically a four-hour session for businesses and teams, depending on the project complexity. Primary deliverable: Co-created scope.  May also include a Stakeholder Inventory.
  2. The next step (Phase 2) is to develop a Compass for your team and/or for the company or project.  This is typically a four-hour session.  If both individual and company/project Compasses are desired, expect two sessions.
  3. In Phase 3 I facilitate a Connection Mapping session for your team, business, project or program.  This typically takes place in four-hour sessions.  Expect one to six sessions, depending on project complexity and the size of the team.  Primary deliverable: Connection Maps of the project.
  4. If desired, I can work with your team as you implement what you discovered during Phases 1, 2 and 3.  Phase 4 may include one-on-one sessions, sub-team sessions, transferring the connections into standard project management tools, and/or creating quantified risk assessments.  Deliverables vary based on the needs of your team/project, and may include sub-team Connection Maps, Risk/Opportunity Assessments, and Team Complaint Resolution strategies.
  5. Ongoing support and periodic reassessments are available in Phase 5.

The Phases of Facilitating the Connection Mapping Approach:

Phase 1:     ½-Day (4 hours) Intake
(individuals and/or group)

Work with the team to complete first steps of the Connection Map Approach to get a solid overview assessment of the project, challenges, and goals at hand. This Intake initiates the intellectual/energetic shift that will be necessary to complete the rest of the process. This phase helps clients begin to see the possibilities of new pathways.

This phase may be done by phone/email/Web conference, or in person.

Primary deliverable: Co-created scope.  May also include a Stakeholder Inventory.

          Phase 2:     ½ Day Workshop
        (group)

Work with the team to develop a Compass for the project/company.  A compass is a great tool for navigating in conjunction with the business plan.  A compass gives you guidance when opportunities arise.  It is complimentary to a Mission Statement. This phase supports the client in developing a clear vision for the project and the team.

This phase is done in most optimally in person.

Primary deliverable: The Compass

Phase 3:     ½ Day to 3-Day Workshop
(group)

Deeper immersion into the core work of the Connection Mapping Approach, involving as many stakeholders as possible. This phase engages teams into the more complex layers of mapping out the connections, intersections, and gaps in proposed solution scenarios and results in a mutually decided upon path to pursue, including the resources and aspects of team dynamics (connections) needed to succeed.  During this phase critical paths are identified.

This phase is critical to be done in person.  A key aspect of my process is listening broadly for all input and watching for interactions among team members/stakeholders.  I create a space in which everyone contributes and is heard.

Primary deliverable: Connection Maps of the project.

Phase 4:     Implementation Support
(group and/or sub-groups/individuals)

This is the implementation phase of the solution pathway selected in Phase 2. I will either meet with the full team or sub-sections of the team, to prevent team overwhelm and support the habit shifts (behaviors and mindsets) needed to sustain momentum during implementation. The Connection Mapping Approach is applied to any challenges that come up along the way in order to keep clear the pathway to success. On-going support is customized for each unique project and might occur weekly, monthly or quarterly.

Deliverables vary based on the needs of your team/project, and may include sub-team Connection Maps, Risk/Opportunity Assessments, and Team Complaint Resolution strategies.

Phase 5:     Outcomes Assessment/On-Going Support
(group and/or sub-groups/individuals)

In this phase, I am available for support as needed in instances where aspects of the initial solution scenario have changed suddenly (e.g. a key stakeholder leaves, funds are lost, regulations have changed, etc.).  I will help the team anticipate and navigate the inevitable shifts/changes to the solution scenario, reminding the team that such adjustments are an organic part of the process (not a crisis or failure). Viable solution pathways are fluid … the process is like growing a tree, not building a brick wall.

Anticipating and planning for shift is powerful and strategic. My Connection Mapping process helps hold space for team members to voice fear or panic. When held back, these emotive elements typically derail or stifle progress.  I can guide your team into making them fuel for propelling the team forward.
